What exactly is the point of having an engagement photoshoot? some couples may ask. Is it even necessary? Why should you do it?
It’s totally optional, and it’s up to the couple whether they want to do it or not. Nothing is ever necessary besides the marriage license, of course! However, I do believe engagement photos are a great idea and an investment worth making. Here are five reasons why engagement photos matter:
1. Get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day
Not many couples are naturally comfortable in front of the camera unless they are professional models (especially when it comes to taking candid, romantic, or intimate shots with their partner). Learning how to pose or smile can be awkward, especially when a photographer is there to capture your every move. Your engagement session can serve as a test run for your wedding day, where you’ll be photographed hundreds and even thousands of times. They allow you to become comfortable with the camera without the additional stress of the wedding day.
2. Both you and your photographer get to know one another.
Engagement shoots are a great way for you and your wedding photographer to get to know each other. It is important to have a personal connection with your photographer, even if you know them professionally. Because your wedding photographer will be with you the entire time, you want to be sure that you feel comfortable and confident trusting them with the most important day of your life.
3. Get material to use pre-wedding
When you have your engagement photos, there are endless things you can do with them. You can use your engagement photos to announce your engagement. Sharing your professional engagement photos on Instagram will obviously be more exciting than a cellphone picture if social media is more your thing. Your engagement photos can also be used to create save-the-date cards and wedding invitations! You can even customize the look of your wedding invitations by using your engagement photos.
4. Celebrate your love
Taking engagement photos is a great way to connect with your partner, have fun, and commemorate this very special time in your life. Choosing special locations and places that are meaningful to you and your significant other can help you capture your special moment. You can also choose locations that reflect your personality for an even more memorable experience.
Maybe it is the location of your first date, your engagement, or the place where you enjoy spending time sharing an interest. A few locations to consider are your hometowns, the college where you met, a favorite restaurant or bar, a museum, the zoo, a movie theater, or even your own house. Your images will feel more special if you choose a meaningful location and you’ll also be more comfortable in an environment that you’re familiar with.
5. Express yourselves and be creative
When you will have so many beautiful wedding photos, why get engagement photos? some couples may ask. The reason is that engagement photos provide a different perspective and help to tell your love story. You can expect wedding photos to be formal while engagement photos are typically more casual, fun, and relaxed. You’ll enjoy looking back on them years from now as much as you do your wedding day photos. The goal of engagement photos is to capture you with your beloved, sitting in a natural environment and enjoying time together. Also, you will have complete creative control over what location, clothing, and overall look best represents you both.
A beautiful, fun engagement photo will make your engagement memorable. The wedding photographer can help showcase what is special and unique about your love.
